Florida has an estimated population of 500,000 invasive pythons.
USGS says its own conservative estimate for Burmese pythons in the Greater Everglades is tens of thousands, and most other cited ranges top out around 100,000 to 300,000. No agency or study backs a figure anywhere near 500,000, so that number is well beyond what's actually been documented.
Burmese pythons were imported to the United States in the 1970s largely from eggs incubated in Southeast Asia.
The broad outline checks out: Burmese pythons did enter the US pet trade in the 1970s from Southeast Asia, and that's well documented. No source turned up confirms the specific detail that they arrived as eggs incubated overseas rather than as hatchlings or young snakes, so that part of the claim stays unconfirmed even after a real search for it.
California banned python products in 1970 to protect the Indian python.
California's Penal Code 653o, which bans commercial sale of python products, does date to 1970, but sources conflict on whether python was on the original list that year or added the following year. It's also unclear the ban was specifically aimed at protecting the Indian python, since that species wasn't federally listed as endangered until 1976, well after the California law took effect.
Strictly Reptiles in Hollywood, Florida, was at one point selling 5,000 green iguanas per week.
Strictly Reptiles was genuinely known as the dominant 'Iguana King' importer in the 1980s, and a rival importer was documented bringing in nearly 200,000 iguanas in a single year just to compete, which works out to roughly the same range as 5,000 a week. No source found states Strictly Reptiles' own weekly volume directly, though, so the specific number stays unconfirmed.
Tony Biscaro was released from prison approximately five years ago.
Antonio 'Tony' Bascaro, the pilot this appears to reference, was released from federal custody on May 1, 2019. Counting back from when this episode came out in August 2026, that's about seven years, not five.
Snakes are the subject of the most common dreams reported in the United States.
Actual surveys don't back this up. A 2,007 person Amerisleep survey found falling (53.5%) and being chased (50.9%) are by far the most commonly reported recurring dreams among Americans, and snakes don't even show up among the top ranked dream themes.
Alligators can run at speeds of approximately 30 miles per hour.
Documented alligator sprint speeds top out around 11 mph sustained, with some sources citing brief bursts near 20 mph for only a few seconds. Nothing in the record supports a 30 mph running speed.
The American alligator was officially classified as an endangered species during the 1950s and 1960s.
The American alligator was formally listed as endangered in 1967, a single-year action, not something that played out gradually across the 1950s and 1960s. The population crash that led to the listing did happen mostly during those decades because of unregulated hunting and habitat loss, but the actual classification itself was a 1967 event.
The United States possesses the highest number of turtle and tortoise species of any country in the world, with 51 recognized species.
Virginia Tech's extension service puts the count at 58 turtle species across the U.S. and Canada combined, not 51 for the U.S. alone, and multiple sources point to Southeast Asia as having a larger and more at-risk pool of turtle species than North America. So the claim that the U.S. has the most turtle species of any country in the world doesn't hold up.
Approximately 50% of wildlife exported illegally from the United States consists of marine life such as coral and invertebrates.
No source turned up a breakdown of what illegal wildlife exports from the US actually consist of. If anything, the numbers found point the other way: a World Wildlife Fund review put the US at just over 1% of the global export trade in coral reef organisms, though that figure covers overall legal trade rather than specifically illegal exports.
Ploughshare tortoises do not reach sexual maturity until they are 30 to 40 years old.
Ploughshare tortoises are genuinely slow to mature, but the commonly cited age for reaching sexual maturity is around 15 years, not 30 to 40. That's still a long time for a tortoise, just roughly half of what's claimed here.
Tony Biscaro served a 40-year sentence for marijuana smuggling.
This appears to be Antonio 'Tony' Bascaro, the Bay of Pigs veteran and pilot convicted in 1980 for smuggling marijuana. He was actually sentenced to 60 years, not 40. He ended up serving close to 40 years behind bars thanks to good behavior credit, which is likely where the 40-year figure comes from, but that's how long he served, not the sentence a judge gave him.
All of this ran on its own. The claims got pulled out of the transcript, then checked against live sources.
