The Austin Quest for Ancient Civilizations is held at ACL Live, but the official Austin visitor listing gives its dates as October 16 to 18, 2026, not October 15 to 18. In the episode, Engle first says October 16 and then says the 15th through the 18th, so the start date is one day off while the end date and the event itself are right. Falsifier: an official schedule, venue listing or ticket page showing the event starting on October 15, 2026.

Angkor did have a huge, sophisticated network of reservoirs, canals and moats, and research ranks it among the largest preindustrial cities in the world by area. But scholars don't rank it as the most advanced water system of the ancient world, and Angkor dates from about AD 802 to the 1400s, so it is medieval rather than ancient. It is also in Cambodia, not the Pacific islands, and LiDAR surveys have already mapped much of its scale.

Egyptian writing did not appear fully formed in the Old Kingdom. Labels from tomb U-j at Abydos are carbon dated to about 3400 to 3200 BC and already show early hieroglyphic signs. Writing then developed through the late Predynastic and Early Dynastic periods. The first known full sentence in mature hieroglyphs dates to the Second Dynasty, centuries after those first signs, so the record shows gradual development.

The big US grain agreement with the Soviet Union was signed under President Ford in October 1975, and it covers grain purchases, not emigration. Congress did tie Soviet trade benefits to letting people leave through the 1974 Jackson-Vanik amendment, and Jewish emigration rose in the late 1970s. But there is no documented Carter deal swapping grain for emigrants, and Carter's best-known grain move was the 1980 embargo against the Soviets.

Soviet comedy was tightly controlled by the state, and Arkady Raikin was its biggest star. But there were far more than about two approved comedians. Gennady Khazanov performed through Moscontsert, a Moscow state concert agency, from 1973, and the duo Roman Kartsev and Viktor Ilchenko and the writer Mikhail Zhvanetsky were also well known, state-sanctioned humorists in the 1970s.

The real version of this superlative is about Africa, not Europe. Ghana's coast from Keta to Beyin, roughly 500 km holding about 29 surviving structures, is described as the highest concentration of European built forts and castles on the African continent, and UNESCO inscribed them in 1979. The listing makes no comparison with Europe, which is itself packed with castles and fortifications, so saying the density beat anywhere in Europe goes well past the evidence. The forts are real and their role in the slave trade is real, the comparison is the stretch.

The real point is right but the multiple is far too big. In the early 1770s, all thirteen mainland colonies together exported just over 3 million pounds a year, while sugar, rum and molasses from Barbados, Jamaica and the Leeward Islands combined came to about 4 million pounds. That makes the whole British Caribbean worth roughly 1.3 times the mainland, not Jamaica alone worth five times. Jamaica was the biggest single sugar island, but its exports were a fraction of that 4 million figure.

There are two parts here and neither is quite right. Britain's campaign was not the first: Quakers in Germantown, Pennsylvania signed a petition against slavery in 1688, and the Pennsylvania Abolition Society formed in 1775, twelve years before London's Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade in 1787. On the ship, the 1781 Zong massacre and the 1783 insurance case did feed the British campaign and Granville Sharp publicized it hard, but historians note its immediate effect on public opinion was limited and it was one of several triggers rather than the single spark. The defensible kernel is that Britain's was the first mass national abolition campaign.

The development of modern insurance, particularly maritime insurance, predates the height of the transatlantic slave trade, with roots in medieval trade and the Italian Renaissance. While the slave trade utilized and contributed to the growth of existing insurance markets—most notably through the case of the slave ship Zong—attributing the 'birth' of the entire industry to this single source obscures the complex historical evolution of risk management.

The timing is right but the currency is not. Jamaica delivered a reparations petition to King Charles III on September 7, 2026, and the government's own estimate of what it is owed is about 10 billion US dollars, which is roughly 7.6 billion pounds, not 10 billion pounds. That figure traces back to a 2021 motion by Jamaican lawmaker Mike Henry. Reporting also notes the petition itself asks the King to refer three legal questions to the Privy Council rather than naming a sum.

The destruction is enormous, but 90 percent is higher than the UN satellite figures. UNOSAT, the UN satellite centre, reported in August 2026 that about 82 percent of structures in Gaza are damaged, roughly 200,000 buildings, with about two thirds of those destroyed. That works out to a bit over half of all structures destroyed rather than 90 percent of Gaza being gone.

The 6.5 figure is real but it is not a health line. The EPA's pH range of 6.5 to 8.5 is a secondary standard, which is non enforceable and based on taste, color and pipe corrosion, and the EPA states these contaminants are not considered to present a risk to human health at that level. The World Health Organization sets no health based guideline value for pH at all. Low pH can still matter indirectly, because acidic water is more corrosive and can pull metals like lead and copper out of pipes, which is a fair concern in a mining area.

The Portuguese did not invent the lateen rig. The triangular sail was already long established in Mediterranean and Arab seafaring, and World History Encyclopedia notes the Portuguese caravel sail was inspired by Arab vessels such as the dhow. What Portugal did was apply that existing sail to the caravel, which let crews sail within about five points of the wind and beat home against northerly winds. The geography is also off: Europeans had reached the Canary Islands in the 1300s, and the barrier the Portuguese finally passed in 1434, after 12 years of failed attempts, was Cape Bojador farther south.

The study behind this is a 2024 paper by Rivera and colleagues that ran five off the shelf AI models through simulated wargames. It found that all five escalated, often in hard to predict ways, and drifted into arms race dynamics. But the paper says nuclear weapons were deployed only in rare cases, not almost always. The escalation finding is real, the part about the models nearly always reaching for nukes is not.

Sugarcane was in Europe well before the Crusades. Muslim expansion carried the crop into Spain and across North Africa, and it was planted in Cyprus, Crete and Sicily by the early 800s, roughly three centuries before the First Crusade in 1096. Sicily had a strong sugar-growing period from about 800 to 1050, so it did grow in parts of southern Europe. The Crusades did widen European familiarity with sugar and expand the trade, but they were not the first contact.

The date is off by about a year. The Understanding Slavery Initiative records that the Dutch ship was seized by the British off West Africa in 1781 and bought by Liverpool owners, then left Sao Tome for Jamaica on 6 September 1781 after loading captives on the African coast that August. The killings took place between 29 November and 1 December 1781, and the ship reached Black River, Jamaica on 22 December 1781. No October 1780 sailing is documented for this voyage.

The Churches of Christ came out of the American Restoration Movement that started between 1790 and 1810, led by Thomas and Alexander Campbell in Pennsylvania and Barton W. Stone in Kentucky, with the two groups merging in Lexington, Kentucky in 1832. The formal separation from the Disciples of Christ showed up in the 1906 US census. Texas is one of the denomination's strongest states today, which is probably where the idea comes from, but it is not where the church began.

The direction is right but "only" is too strong. Texas Comptroller data released in August 2026 shows that of the 118,441 students awarded money under the new Education Freedom Accounts program, 70 percent had previously been in private school or homeschooled and 30 percent came from public school. So roughly one in three recipients was not already a private school family, and the 70 percent figure lumps homeschoolers in with private school students.

The 70 percent figure is real but it is Goodyear's estimate of how many tires now sold in California would be pushed out by the stricter second phase in 2033, not a description of what is banned today. The rule the Energy Commission adopted sets rolling resistance limits that begin with tires made on or after January 1, 2029, and tighten in 2033, and manufacturers can redesign tires to qualify. Commission members pointed the other way, saying a large share of tires on the market already meet the 2029 standard, and nothing about tires already on your car changes.

California does require nonlead ammunition to take any wildlife with a firearm anywhere in the state, rifles and shotguns included, fully phased in on July 1, 2019. But the rule is written as nonlead, meaning one percent lead content or less, not copper specifically. Copper is the common choice for rifle bullets, while shotgun hunters normally use steel or bismuth shot, which is legal and is not copper.
