Joe Rogan Experience #2554 - Carlo Rovelli · Aired Sep 15, 2026
Claim summary · not a verbatim quotation
Quantum mechanics suggests that the idea of an objective reality is wrong.
The finding
What the evidence shows
This is Rovelli's own position, called relational quantum mechanics, which he proposed in 1996 and which drops observer-independent facts. It is a real and seriously discussed reading of the theory, but it is one of several, alongside Copenhagen, many-worlds, pilot-wave and QBism, and specialists have raised objections to it. The math of quantum mechanics is settled; what it says about objective reality is not, so presenting it as what quantum mechanics is telling us overstates the agreement. In the episode he does hedge, saying it "might be wrong" and "I think it's wrong."
