Joe Rogan Experience #2571 - Jimmy Carr · Aired Oct 28, 2026
Claim summary · not a verbatim quotation
Joseph Campbell wrote his PhD dissertation on the book Finnegan's Wake by James Joyce.
The finding
What the evidence shows
Carr connects Joseph Campbell's work on Joyce to a supposed PhD dissertation. The Joseph Campbell Foundation describes a master's degree, followed by further study, and lists A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake, coauthored with Henry Morton Robinson in 1944. The Hero with a Thousand Faces was a separate original work published in 1949. The real Joyce influence does not establish the dissertation-to-short-summary story.
